Johnny Joined Pete Paphides on the world's only vinyl music show, where he celebrates the format with musicians who are avid collectors.

Here is Pete Paphides talking about the show.

"I've always collected vinyl. And everyone I know who is obsessive about music never stopped buying vinyl. I always thought that my dream radio show would be one where you just had someone playing vinyl records on good equipment, perhaps talking about them with other guests who had brought in their favourite records. And it wouldn't matter what the genre was or if you could hear surface noise, because no-one I know is really that bothered about surface noise anyway. And what you gain with the depth of sound from vinyl far exceeds the clarity gained from digital formats. Plus, everyone knows that aesthetically, vinyl offers a far more satisfying experience.

So when I resigned from my job at The Times last year, I arranged a meeting with a producer called Ben Walker – he produces Dermot O'Leary's show – and told him all this. Ben liked the idea and took it to BBC 6 Music. To his credit, James Stirling, who is the station's execuive producer, and commissioning editor Paul Rodgers, got it straight away, and commissioned a pilot, providing there was enough interest from prospective guests. The pilot (which aired in April) featured Paul Weller and Laura Marling in the studio, with me going to Norman Cook's house and rummaging through his vinyl.

All the musicians I approached understood what the show was trying to do. Johnny was high on my wish-list of guests. I had interviewed him about five years ago about his involvement at a gig that Andy Rourke had helped organise. The interview lasted about half an hour, but we carried on talking about old records for about another hour. I was a huge Pentangle fan, and Johnny had worked with Bert Jansch, so we talked about what an incredible guitarist Bert was. Johnny was the first musician I met who had ever heard Stormcock by Roy Harper and or Moyshe McStiff & The Tartan Lancers of the Sacred Heart by Clive's Original Band – both real collector's records. I remembered I had his email address from when I had interviewed him on that occasion. I wrote to him and told him a little about the show. I know he's not over here a lot these days, so I wasn't expecting him to say yes. But he remembered talking about those records and about Iggy & The Stooges' Raw Power. I wasn't that surprised that he got the idea – because everything about our previous encounter and the way he has always talked about music in interviews led me to believe that he would get it.

The records he's chosen to play on the show are – in microcosm – what I hoped the show would be about. A combination of stuff you might already know and a whole load of stuff you wish you had heard years beforehand. The Arturo track is an absolute find, I think. I'd never heard it before, and I'm dead excited about turning on thousands of listeners to it. The Amon Duul II track is just an incredible, life-affirming piece of music that once again, it'll be amazing to have on the radio".

Johnny Marr Talks Soundtracks Albums and Guitars

Johnny recently spoke to Phil Gallo of Billboard Magazine.
Johnny Marr who is currently working on two albums and scoring the second season of David Cross's British TV series, "The Increasingly Poor Decision of Todd Margaret," plans to release music from his new edition of his band the Healers early next year, soon after Fender's release in January of a Johnny Marr edition guitar.

"I just want to write more than enough material to avoid ducking back into the studio to record a follow-up album," Marr tells Billboard, His previous solo album, "Boomslang," was released in 2003.

Marr has toured with the Healers, Modest Mouse and the Cribs over the past several years. Having recently left the Cribs, he figures that once he starts touring again, there will be no stopping.
"I want to take advantage of this point and when I set sail I want to set sail for awhile," he said.
Johnny Marr was nominated for an Academy Award last year for his work with Hans Zimmer on "Inception."
His first full-length film score can be heard May 24 when the detective thriller "The Big Bang" -- starring Antonio Banderas, James Van Der Beek and Sam Elliott -- is released. Marr wrote the score last year, which meant working on the film while he was touring.
"The discipline of finishing a few scenes in a day was useful in writing the record that I am now writing," he says, "There was not a lot of time for indulgence or experimentation - and I like to deliver when I say I'm going to deliver."
As for that Fender guitar, based on a 1962 Jaguar, Marr says " the model has to be perfect. You can see I'm spinning a lot of plates."

Record Store Day took place worldwide on Saturday 16 April 2011. NME’s Laura Snapes asked Johnny what record store day means to him.
You’re reissuing 'The Queen Is Dead' for Record Store Day. What prompted you to get involved?

"I first got involved with RSD a few years ago when Modest Mouse put out an EP [for it]. I think a lot of musicians would seize the opportunity to be involved with an event and a gesture that means something to them and people that think the same way. With regard to ‘The Queen Is Dead’, the record company put it to me at the start of the year.

"My experience of RSD is just a very well intentioned enterprise, so as long as we got it technically right and made sure the records were all sounding and looking right, then it’s something of a celebration - celebrating something that I always loved and still do. Records transcend their physical dimensions. You get more than some plastic spinning around. Lots of things can happen in a record, and lots of life can be taken from a record."

Having been in bands over four decades, you must have noticed differences with the way that people produce, manufacture and sell records.

"Yeah. For a start, I always connected with them as objects, what I was hearing from them as a very little kid. One of my very first memories is of two young women in my family standing at a record player, playing a record on repeat with utter fascination and obsession.

"That was a really powerful thing that I’ve never forgotten. That little object was able to take you away from life and put you in a different place. Then I made the connection between the object and the music, and started to really love the object. They did so much. I still feel the same way.

"All the bands I’ve been in have wanted the same things as the fans, which is important releases, not just tracks. And to this day, I don’t consider the songs I write to be tracks – they’re always records in the making, or being made. The Smiths wrote records. When we wrote the songs, the first thing on our mind was to get to the studio and record it, and we did that in a way that I’ve not seen any other band do.

"Almost immediately as the last chord was written, the studio was booked, the sleeve was being glued together on Morrissey’s kitchen table, and the titles were being considered. It was all one big activity, writing the songs, and it’s been well documented that a lot of our songs were written specifically for people like us to go out and buy as soon as possible."

The Smiths really thrived on non-album singles too.

"Yeah, that’s one of the reasons we wrote them in batches of three – the a-side, the b-side and the extra track for the 12”! It wasn’t exclusively like that, but that was often the way. So we always felt that we had this discourse, a communication between our audience and the band, and the records for me were what it was all about, even more than the shows, to an almost pathological degree! "

Mercury are going to stop selling singles by U2, Arcade Fire and The Killers – is this a mistake?

"Depends on the band! I think it’s a shame - one of the reasons people stopped buying records is because they’re not visible, they’re not available. It’s not as straightforward as saying there are no record shops because people don’t want to buy records. I wonder if it’s not also the case that people don’t buy records because they can’t find the record shops.

"Last year I wrote a short essay called ‘Landlord Stole My Records Off The Street’, which was my observation of the 90s – a lot of the towns I would visit in the UK were just filled with wine bars. A lot of councils and landlords got very greedy, and in their quest to make the world just Next and River Island, they just assumed that the big bucks would come their way from all these huge stores, they priced out all the little shops – certainly the record shops."

"If you take them away, obviously people are going to stop buying the records. These little record stores became estate agents for yuppies, for people who don’t buy records, don’t like records, and wine bars for people to play really bad trip hop in! At least we’re having these kind of dialogues, there’s this light being shone onto these beautiful things, really.

"And like art galleries, they’re mostly there to represent what’s happening within the culture now. Retro record shops are all well and good, fabulous, but there’s nothing better than buying a great new record with a great new band."

And it takes labels like Wichita and bands like The Cribs to insist on vinyl releases as well as downloads, not settling for less.

"It takes people like Wichita to try and find the money to put where their mouths are, and they do. Mark [Bowen]’s a really great example of it. You need those people where the culture, and this case we’re talking about the actual physical records, come before business. And those people would be considered too maverick in ordinary business."

The prime example of this is New Order, losing money on every copy of ‘Blue Monday’ sold, but it changed everything.

"Yeah, that’s a really good example. The Smiths put out ‘Shoplifters Of The World Unite’ in these plastic carrier bags that said “shoplifter” on it as a stylistic joke against HMV, really, but that ended up putting that record in the red, and there was quite a few things that happened like that. The New Order example is a really good one.

"Without someone like Peter Saville – he’s absolutely changed design because of vinyl, and Nick Scott, who I think is one of the really great modern designers, made a really great statement after that on The Cribs’ last album, and that is alongside the music. Without records, those things don’t happen."

Johnny has written and recorded the theme song ‘Life is Sweet’ , and the score for The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret ,a channel 4 sitcom

written by David Cross (Arrested Development, Mr. Show) and Shaun Pye (Extras). The show's opening theme song "Life is Sweet" and incidental music throughout the series was written and recorded by Johnny Marr . The six-episode half hour original comedy series stars David cross as American office temp and convenient liar named Todd Margaret who bluffs his way into a senior sales position heading up the London office for a new energy drink. Cross' out-of-control farce reaches epic proportions when his character's gaffes and misfortunes wreak havoc on the city of London. "The cool thing about Todd Margaret is that, while a straight ahead comedy show, it tells a story that has a beginning and an end. Every episode starts the next morning after the previous episode so that the sense of inescapable impending doom is heightened exponentially with each subsequent show," said David Cross. Johnny Marr 'Inception' Soundtrack Couldn't Have Happened Without Johnny Marr

MTV news has an Interview with Johnny and Hans Zimmer.

"What happened was I kept writing this tune, and I kept hearing Johnny Marr play it," Zimmer told MTV News' Kara Warner at the premiere of "Inception" last week. "Finally, I said to Chris [Nolan], 'What do you think of this idea? I'm like channeling Johnny Marr by now.' And he said it was a great idea." Had Zimmer and Nolan not brought in Marr (who declared the project "a dream come true"), the entire film might have felt different. "I don't think anybody else could have done it," Zimmer said of Marr's work. "It wouldn't have worked otherwise, and I was willing to throw out the tune if he said no." Hampshire Carnivorous Plants have named a new Sarracenia hybrid plant in honour of Johnny Marr. They will be unveiling the plant to the world for the first time at this year’s Royal Horticultural Society Show, held at Tatton Park Knutsford Cheshire (21-25 July)

Matt Soper of Hampshire Carnivorous Plants said “ I have been a fan of Johnny’s for some years, and 'play' guitar myself, as does my daughter. I have only named two of my own hybrids previously,

one for her, Rebecca and the other, my wife, Juthatip. I understand you must get many requests for Johnny Marrs' attention, but hoped he might be interested in my approach for introducing a new plant in his honour at the RHS Tatton Park Flower Show, almost 'home ground'.
I'm an award-winning nurseryman having attained numerous gold medal awards for growing Plants all over the country, twelve consecutive 'golds' at Chelsea, and just last week, Best in Show at Hampton Court Palace. Hampshire Carnivorous Plants is my own business, run by myself with the help of my family. It has grown out of my passion for these plants, ( I grew my first venus fly trap when just six years old! ), and we are incredibly proud of our success, in part, thanks to the encouragement and faith in my ability of the Royal Horticultural Society, allowing me to concentrate in a change in career from being a builder.

“ When the Smiths played Glastonbury in 1984, we were slightly out of our element. Previously, we'd always played to manic, devoted audiences who were more like supporters at a cup final, but at Glastonbury we were playing to people who largely hadn't seen us before. It wasn't like when Jay-Z played, but we were very "urban" compared to the other acts. Our songs were
so fast that we got through our first four in about the time it took for the other bands to finish their intro. Eventually, I did manage to instigate a stage invasion, which raised a few eyebrows. One fan was trying to climb on stage, I helped pull him up, and then a few more people followed, and all of a sudden we'd managed to turn it into a Smiths gig.
What people don't realise is how mellow and low-key Glastonbury used to be. It wasn't televised, and it wasn't a career-defining moment back then. You'd turn up to find just three fields – and they would be by no means full. You had a choice between the shit field, the field no one cares about, or the muddy one. Today's video screens would have seemed like an utter abomination.
Glastonbury's rise in popularity has a lot to do with rave culture. People were getting together in warehouses at the end of motorways just to avoid the police, and then they realised Glastonbury offered thousands of people a chance to get together legally. Suddenly, Glastonbury no longer seemed an outdated idea, whereas in the 80s, it had been caught between the ideals of the 70s and something which had yet to be defined.
Worst Glastonbury moment The first 10 minutes of the Smiths' performance in 84, because the sound got screwed up on stage. My guitar was coming out of the bass amp, and the vocals were, too. They pulled things together . . . by the time of the last song”.

Johnny was awarded the inspiration award at Thursday’s 55th Ivor Novello Awards held at Grosvenor House London.
Johnny, who was presented with the award by Alex Kapranos, told the audience
: I always thought that the greatest thing you can achieve as a musician is to be called an inspiration - aside from a big house in Sunningdale obviously.
Thank you to everyone who's followed me through all the twists and turns. Hopefully there will be more twists and turns, because that's what I like.
I believe that rock music, and pop music, is an art form and should be an art form, and it's all about inspiration. I'll continue to try to live up to it.

Playing the guitar means always having something cool to do. It means having ambitions to be a rock star, escaping your life, or just learning to play your favourite songs. It means having fun - because you really don't need to be able to read music or have lessons to do it pretty well - and it means buying a strap and making sure it's the correct length so it looks right and feels comfortable. But mainly so it looks right. Playing the guitar means forming a band with your mates and having your own thing, and it means struggle, on your own with sore fingers for two weeks, or with your band in little pubs, clubs and vans around the country until something happens or you give up. Playing the guitar means meeting new people and making new friends, it means staying up late, and showing off, and it means being able to express yourself, often at very high volume. Playing the guitar means fixating on a particular model or make you dream about getting but can't afford. It means dressing up, and impressing some girls and impressing some boys. It means having a laugh, or disagreements over bits of songs or the direction of the group or the cover of the record, and it means feeling so happy about a riff or a song that you want the world to hear it that minute. Playing the guitar means never being alone with nothing to do. It means strumming for fun, or going further and further into amazing territory and a lifetime of discovery and discipline, or just taking up a hobby that gives you a bit pleasure and a sense of achievement. Playing the guitar means everything. Know what I mean?

As the third US Britweek festival approaches , Tom Gockelen-Kozlowski talks to Johnny Marr about living in the US. Britweek is the result of a noticeable shift in our "special relationship", as more and more British musicians cross the Atlantic. More intriguing is the move to Portland that Johnny Marr made in 2005. Since moving, Marr has seen his career gain a new energy and seen the average age of his fans fall markedly. Now a permanent member of two bands, Modest Mouse and the Cribs, the Mancunian has – in Portland – found a place where he can finally escape the questions about The Smiths and the personal intrusions that fame inevitably brings in England. “The obsession with the celebrity culture and the wannabe celebrity culture – as big as it is in America, doesn’t occupy 80 per cent of the media as it seems to in the UK”, explains Marr. "This obsession with celebrating the moronic is something I found it very difficult to escape from." He now plays to audiences who think of him as the Modest Mouse guitarist who used to play with the Smiths, not the other way around, and it is this freedom to recreate your identity that seems to attract many British artists.

. “Making records, for young British bands, almost seemed like handing in your homework to Radio One,” Marr remembers. "I think a lot of so-called alternative musicians in the UK are closer to the X-factor than they’d like to admit."

In contrast, bands like Animal Collective and Vampire Weekend are finding success with music that doesn’t fit a well-run formula and brings something new to music fans. This upsurge of creativity exists, says Marr, because of the support of like-minded individuals sticking together. “In Portland and Williamsburg there does seem to be a genuine community of musicians who help carry each other’s bags." “I’m not being down on Britain,” Marr said more than once. “Provocateurs and people with something to say can say it nationally more easily in the UK and that’s something that’s always going to be better – it’s ultimately less conservative in the UK and I miss that. If you’re in the United States too long… everything gets a little beige.”

johnny has scored and narrated a short art film celebrating American artist Ed Ruscha's 1963 piece 'Noise', which along with other paintings is on show at London's Southbank Centre exhibition, Fifty Years Of Painting, which runs until January 10.

The 30-second clip is the work of an old friend of Johnny's, director Fiona Skinner, whose film recently won a competition which asked directors to produce a video that represented Ruscha's work.

Johnny Marr to score ‘Big Bang’ Film

Johnny is composing the original score for The Big Bang, “a neo-noir detective story” starring Banderas as a Los Angeles-based private detective, also starring are Delroy Lindo, Sam Elliott, William Fichtner and Snoop Dogg. “This will be Johnny’s first film score and he was just ranked the number one greatest guitarist of all time by Virgin Media,” producer Reece Pearson commented to MovieScore Magazine,
The director of The Big Bang is Tony Krantz, who was a producer on David Lynch’s Mulholland Dr. and Directed last year’s Otis. The music supervisor on the picture is Rudy Chung (Goal! The Dream Begins, Flicka). The film stars Banderas as a private detective who is searching for a burlesque performer who no one has ever seen. Banderas also faces a brutal Russian boxer, three LAPD detectives and an ageing billionaire looking to perfect the nuclear physics equivalent of the Big Bang.

Topping their previous honor of selecting Jackpot as one of three places IN THE WORLD to sell the deluxe Roses (they’ve really taken to their new Portland homes) Edition of their latest album “Ignore The Ignorant”, they’ve picked us as the launch pad for their upcoming tour. After this they’re off to a Letterman taping, a few coast dates and then the world. In all practicality, this is it for seeing them this year.
Come early to find a spot and brace yourself. We predict a swift transition from SRO to SOL. If you’re unfamiliar with a Cribs gig, it’s not exactly an evening with The Chordettes.
